Telling
our Story in Batik:
A collaborative theological reflection
and art project
by Ask & Imagine 2004 |
| On one of the final days of
our program, guest artist Sarah Clarke led us through a group
reflection on our experiences and learning together. |
We started off silently, each
person doing a guided meditation on their individual journey
while on the program. |
Then, in small groups, we thought
about an image, a colour or symbol that spoke to us of our shared
experience and what we learned. |
| Finally, in the whole group,
we shared those ideas, and put together a concept of how we would
represent our journey through creative art. |
Sarah taught us batik techniques
(wax, dye and fabric).
|
| We came up with three images - flying
geese, stars and a range of colours that moved from dark to light.
The geese motif was particularly significant for us, as one of
our mentors, Sharon, had shared a story early on in the program.
It was about how geese fly in formation, share leadership, look
out for each other, accompany one another, and as a group can
go further than an individual can on their own. Geese, we learned,
honk to encourage one another. (for the rest of the program,
any time someone did something great, the rest of the group honked
like geese!). |
Each person designed their
own goose

And a star
|
The background was waxed
to create the white streaks
|
A whole bunch of people got
into making the colour wash for the background. |
The finished banner speaks
of many things. What do you see? |

|
| The banner now hangs in the
Faculty of Theology at Huron University College. You'll see it
if you go to Ask & Imagine. We hope it tells you something
of our story as a learning community. For us, shared leadership,
affirmation and working as a community brings us from a place
of darkness to light, to new learnings and new awakenings on
the journey of life and faith. |
