Ask & Imagine High School Program

This program is for high school youth who are in grades 9-12 in the 2007/2008 academic year. The August program is an opportunity for you to:learn skills in Ministry; grow in Spirit develop your potential for leadership; understand the roots of your Faith, explore and share your gifts; gain deeper insight into scripture; live in a Christian Community

What happens at the August Program?

At Huron…

The first seven days of the program are at Huron University College in London, Ontario. Participants stay in single or shared rooms in Brough and Henderson House on campus. The leadership team also lives in the house with participants and each residence is supervised by a Residence Advisor (RA). RA's areuniversity-age youth leaders who have been to Ask & Imagine before, so they know what it's like for you. They not only supervise the floor, but coordinate evening activities and recreation times.

While at Huron, we'll explore theological ideas, scripture and issues from a faith perspective. This is not like camp, or even like anyyouth conference you've ever been to. Rebecca, in grade 12 said:

The leaders didn't answer the questions for us, nor treat us like kids, or give us “fluff” about God and life. They pushed our limits to the extreme and got us to think in ways we never have before.I feel so much stronger in my faith, and energized in my spirituality.”

During the first seven days, you'll engage in this process of exploring your life and faith through listening, discussing, discerning – and doing!

Each participant will choose one Exploratory Group to do more in-depth learning on a particular subject. Past Exploratory topics have included Science and Religion, Media, Aboriginal Issues and Multi-Faith Awareness.

Exploring Personality through the "True Colors" workshop

There is a lot of focus on building community and engaging in challenges together. That's more than just getting to know and getting along with each other. Participants learn what it takes to create and be part of an affirming, supportive, open community that is able to accomplish “more than we can ask or imagine through the power of God”. We'll explore the secret of what real community gives us, and what real community demands from us.

In the August program, participants gain a better understanding of group dynamics, conflict and communication. We learn about personality, and how we can offer our best to others. We develop our own leadership skills and potential through small group challenges, sharing groups and through the affirmation of peers and mentors. We'll do this through experiential activities, hands-on workshops, seminars, personal reflection times and daily worship.

Faith-In-Action Encounter

While we're at Huron, participants will take part in a day-long “Faith In Action” project in the city of London. It might mean visiting a drop-in centre for homeless people. It may be helping out at a hospice, or community outreach program. Groups of three or four participants visit different ministries and meet people of all ages who choose to put their faith into action with what they do in their lives.

Retreat Time

Exploring one's own inner life is an important part of spiritual growth and keeps us grounded in the other parts of life. We'll experience a day-long guided retreat and connect with God through creative arts, labyrinth walking, music, meditation, prayer or journaling. You choose.

This is what Ask & Imagine participants look like from 40 feet in the air!

Outdoor Adventure

The last four days of the program take us to an outdoor retreat centre called Canterbury Hills in Ancaster, Ontario. At Canterbury, we'll take some of the things we have learned and apply them to outdoor adventure challenges like high ropes and climbing wall. We'll further develop leadership and ministry skills through hands-on projects. We'll also enjoy swimming and other outdoor activities. Finally, we pull it all together through reflection and integration, and conclude with a celebration banquet, closing night fiesta (skits, songs, stories) and midnight liturgy.

Travel details

Your travel costs are paid by us, no matter where you live in Canada. Participants from the Episcopal Church in the USA will receive a travel subsidy and should enquire through the program office about this (it depends where you live!).

Participants traveling by car will receive mileage for one return journey from their home to London .

You will most likely travel by bus, car or train if you live in Ontario, Quebec, Michigan, some parts of New York State or Ohio. You will probably travel by air if you are coming from elsewhere. Some people may be nervous about traveling such a long way if they have never traveled on their own before. Don't worry. The program administrator will make travel arrangements in consultation with you and your parents, and tickets (if required) will be sent to you prior to your departure date. Sometimes those will be e-tickets, and the details will be sent in a letter or email. If you are traveling by train or by air, you will be met at the station/airport in London by one of our staff members. We know you're coming, and we'll be there to meet you!

Once you have been accepted to the program, you will receive an extensive welcome package in the mail, with instructions, directions, list of what to bring, health information sheet, contact phone numbers, schedule, etc.

The program begins officially at 9:00 am on Sunday, August 10. Saturday, August 9 is the travel day and participants need to arrive before 6:00 pm. The program ends at noon on Wednesday August 20 with participants returning home that day.
